Over the past 44 years, I have become a specialist Footwear Restorer, Retailer, Importer, Distributor, Last & Sole Developer, Custom Footwear Fitter and Specialist Footwear Educationalist, which allows me to educate and interact with customers who require assistance with medical, formal, lifestyle, athletic, golf, climbing, cycling, outdoor and safety (PPE) footwear. The term “Podocalceist” is an apt description of an Individual who has an in depth understanding of all of the above and more.
My passion for footwear started way back when my late father, a leading orthopaedic surgeon, suggested that I learn more about footwear, while he would teach me anatomy, biomechanics and common conditions of the foot. We both had big feet (UK14) and struggled to find quality shoes in those days, thus my commitment to footwear. I spent years consulting medical specialists, visiting factories, tanneries and shoemakers to improve my knowledge and understanding of the relationship between feet and footwear. My footwear mentor was the late Ken Riches, who dedicated many hours of his expert time to me, discussing the various aspects of footwear design and manufacture.
It’s important to know that footwear training and education is as important today as ever before. The Tech Age and AI have and will exponentially improve production, distribution, retail, design, fitting and most aspects of the footwear industry. Existing footwear personnel and management will be hard pressed to keep up with their own areas of excellence, in addition to the multitude of new influences, to stay ahead of the “curve”.
